“Really amazing to see these personal stories being told in collaboration with passionate artists and seeing how much joy it brought everyone involved - we need more initiatives like this!”
Alene D
"Before this apprenticeship, I was seriously considering leaving the arts world altogether. I was a little stuck because I didn’t know where my place was and if there even was one. This apprenticeship had a massive impact on my creative future. It opened my eyes to the many possibilities and roles in arts administration and that the world needs more female leaders!"
Rachel F
"Shadowpath Theatre significantly helps enhance accessibility to heritage and cultural programming in York Region."

"Shadowpath's approach to the performing arts in relation to culture, heritage and the environment offers a uniquely educational, entertaining and engaging experience which reflects the unique and storied locations throughout...Southern Ontario."
Chrissy K
"Shadowpath creates significant value for the York Region community and has earned an admirable reputation over two decades".
Maureen D
"Since I have fatigue and speech issues, my participation in Shadowpath's
workshops has been limited. Alex and Chantal however are very sensitive and skillful
facilitators. They have known how to ‘nudge’ me into participation at my own pace and
to read my individual limits. Their drama exercises serve as a therapeutic tool and I can say this from my own direct experience! I am now finding that I have more confidence and feel much more relaxed in a dynamic group setting. Thanks to these gifted women, I can see how Shadowpath’s drama program has an important role to play in the arena of community health."

Being able to perform in unconventional places and environments has been the most refreshing approach to theatre that I have worked on so far in my career. As an actor, it transforms how you adapt and interact with the space, the audience, and my fellow castmates. It has been such a privilege to perform in heritage spaces, and most importantly in my home of York Region.
What's Happening

The Beauty of Boundaries (a lesson on saying no)
with Grace Delamere
A pay-what-you-can virtual workshop
What if saying no was the most creative thing you could do?
Learn how boundaries don't limit your art - they sustain it.
CONTENT WARNING:
We may discuss some heavy topics, including burnout, boundaries, and “yes” culture. Please take care of yourself and prioritize your well-being. If you need to step away from the workshop, turn off your camera, or just witness an activity rather than participating, please do.
In creative and performing arts spaces, there's an unspoken pressure to always say yes to every opportunity, every request, every late-night rehearsal. But what happens when saying yes to everything means saying no to yourself?
In this session, we'll explore why boundaries ARE the foundation of creativity. From managing physical limits like fatigue and injury, to navigating the blurry lines of creative professional relationships, we'll unpack what it actually means to protect your time, energy and artistry.
We'll look at the different types of boundaries, how to communicate them with confidence and care, and why a well-placed "no" makes everything else you do more sustainable.
Whether you're burnt out, overcommitted, or just tired of feeling guilty for resting, this session is for you. You'll leave with practical tools to define your own boundaries, language to communicate them gracefully, and a fresh perspective on saying no, as an act of creativity in itself.

Acts of Kindness Workshop
with Maissa Bessada
Acts of Kindness cards invite small, intentional actions that support mental health and boost oxytocin levels by fostering connection, empathy and a sense of purpose, for the giver and the receiver. Even brief, everyday interactions, like a kind word or short exchange, can lift one's mood and reduce feelings of isolation.
For artists, who often work in isolation, these gestures create meaningful moments of connection that can ease self-doubt, interrupt burnout, and remind us we’re part of a larger creative community.
In this workshop, you’ll engage with kindness cards, as well as create your own acts of kindness to contribute, expanding a shared deck based in collective care in the spirit of International Friendship Day!
Then, we'll put kindness into motion. Participants will select cards and head out into the community to carry out small, intentional acts in real time. Along the way, they’ll document the experience through photos or simple note-taking. This activation transforms the cards from ideas into lived experiences, extending care beyond the room and into everyday spaces.
“Acts of kindness” refer to benevolent and helpful actions intentionally directed towards another person, motivated by the desire to help another and not to gain reward or to avoid punishment. Participating in acts of kindness helped individuals with depression or anxiety to divert their attention from themselves and take their minds off their own symptoms. ABOUT
Transforming Everyday Places Into Creative Spaces

A NOTE FROM OUR
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
'When everyone benefits,
a whole community wins.'
'When I started Shadowpath in 2002, I had no idea of its potential. I approached everyday spaces because I couldn't afford to rent the few regional theatres. That turned out to be the best thing for Shadowpath and now everyday spaces are our signature style of theatre producing. Businesses gain a creative boost and access to new customers, performers get a professional opportunity to work in alternative spaces, the community gets more arts and culture programming and Shadowpath connects to community partners and free space! Now that's winning! -Alex Karolyi

Land Acknowledgement
We celebrate the work and lives of the first artists, the first story-tellers and the first history-makers who have been forgotten or ignored as time marched on. We acknowledge these early Creators that lived on the lands we now occupy. These are the traditional lands and territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabe peoples. The histories of those that previously cared for this land, the stories they told, and the lives they lived remain an integral part of it. In illuminating the voices of The Forgotten we hope to forge a bridge between all people creating a better more inclusive world where each of us is heard and our contributions acknowledged, commemorated and remembered.

Black Lives Matter
The Shadowpath family stands in solidarity with
Black Lives Matter and commits to actions and attitudes that fully support our black community. We aim to be part of the urgent change necessary to create a truly equal community.
We are doing this through specific and conscious actions with the programs we are presenting, the artists we are collaborating with and the perspectives and stories we are giving a platform to.
We continue to evaluate how we can do MORE.
